Serra Mesa is comprised of over 8,000 homes that include mostly single family houses although there are some apartments and condominiums. There are several neighborhoods here including Birdland, Abbots Hill, and Mission Village. The Village at Serra Mesa is located in the Naval Complex. Sera Mesa is located between Interstate 15 and Interstate 805 with Aero Drive to the south and Friars Road to the north. It was named after a Majorcan Franciscan friar, Junipero Serra, who established the Mission San Diego de Alcala.
There are six elementary schools in this region.
